March 23: History and Milestones

Honestly, today is a heavy one in the history books—especially here in India. It’s March 23, which most of us know as Shaheed Diwas.

It’s the day back in 1931 when Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were executed. It’s wild to think they were only in their early 20s—basically kids by today’s standards—yet they had that kind of resolve. It’s a massive day for reflection on what “bravery” actually looks like.

Beyond that, the day has some pretty “butterfly effect” moments globally:

  • 1933: Hitler officially grabbed total power in Germany after the Enabling Act passed. It’s one of those “the world changed forever in a single afternoon” kind of dates.
  • 1956: Pakistan became the first Islamic Republic.
  • 2001: Remember the Mir Space Station? It finally came crashing down into the Pacific today after 15 years in orbit. End of a massive era for space exploration.

On a lighter note (or a more “productive” one):

  • 1857: The first commercial elevator was installed in NYC. Imagine life without those? Cities would look a lot flatter.
  • 1910: The legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa was born today. If you’ve ever watched a Western or a Star Wars movie, you’re basically watching his influence.

Also, happy birthday to Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and Kangana Ranaut!
